What is required in order to create a website?

If you would like to create your website you will need two things: a domain name and web hosting. But, what exactly is a domain name? What is a web hosting service? Isn’t it the same thing?

What is a domain name?

A domain name is the address of your website on the internet, where people can visit it online.

Our website’s domain name, for example, is amitywebsitedesign.com

When you purchase a domain name from a domain host, you gain ownership of it for the duration of one year. You can register a domain name for a period  up to 10 years. To keep ownership of your domain name you have to renew it every year. Domain renewal cost around $15 on average for .com domains depending on your domain host.

If the domain name expires and you do not renew it it becomes available for registration and anybody can register it.

What is website hosting and why do i need it?

Web hosting is a service that provides storage for all of your website’s files.

All your website files are stored on a special computer called a “server”. This computer’s purpose is to store your website files and to display them to website visitors when they visit your website’s domain name.

These computers or “servers” are owned by companies that rent them to you and they charge you for this service on a monthly or a yearly basis. When you buy a hosting package, you’re renting space on a real server to store all of the files and data for your website.

Website hosting pricing can range anywhere from $10 per month up to $1000+ per month for large websites.

How does the payment process work?

We offer two payment models:
1. A proposal will be discussed and agreed upon. At this point, 50% of the project fee is due. We will develop, design, and finalize your site. When you are happy with the site and are ready to launch, the other 50% is due before we launch the site. Within 24 hours of receiving the last payment of the project fee, your website will be live.

2. The total project development cost will be split into monthly payments on a period of 2, 4, 6, or 12 months.

How much does a website cost?

The answer reflects the size of the website.

For small websites, our projects are typically quoted between $3000 – $6000 USD

For medium websites the projects are typically quoted in a range from $6000 – $10000 USD

For large (enterprise) or e-Commerce websites our project quotes range between $30000+ USD

How long does it take to create a website?

Each project is different, but on average we have a website launched within 2 to 6 weeks depending on the complexity of the project. This timeline can be longer or shorter depending on how proactive you are with assets and revisions.

What will my website be built on?

We build all of our websites on a WordPress Content Management System, also known as a CMS. This allows you to make updates to your site without having to know any sort of coding language.  Depending on your business needs, we will make a recommendation for what will fit your needs best. Most of our clients tend to have websites built on WordPress because it’s a powerful yet extremely easy-to-use platform for our users. For eCommerce websites we usually use Shopify or WooCommerce, depending on project needs.

What is WordPress?

WordPress  is the world’s most popular tool for creating websites. Over 40% of all the websites use WordPress .  WordPress is capable of creating any style of website, from a simple blog to a full-featured business website and it is customizable.

What is search engine optimization (SEO)?

SEO stands for “search engine optimization.” It’s the practice of increasing both the quality and quantity of website traffic, as well as exposure to your brand, through non-paid (also known as “organic”) search engine results.

Despite the acronym, SEO is as much about people as it is about search engines themselves. It’s about understanding what people are searching for online, the answers they are seeking, the words they’re using, and the type of content they wish to consume. Knowing the answers to these questions will allow you to connect to the people who are searching online for the solutions you offer.

I keep seeing the term "responsive web design". What does this mean?

When a website is responsive, the layout and/or content responds or adapts based on the size of screen they are presented on.

A responsive website automatically changes to fit the device you’re reading it on.

What is a content management system (CMS)?

content management system (CMS) is a software application or set of related programs that are used to create and manage digital content.

In simpler language, a content management system is a tool that helps you build a website without needing to write all the code from scratch (or even know how to code at all).
